Re: First thoughts on the album!

Will listen a few times to give this a very careful review as I know the man himself wants to hear from us all but some first impressions

Not easy to buy early Monday morning (and it was not that early!) in West London - Sainsbury's did not get the new CDs out until about 11 and I got Woolies to go and find it although they had it on display at No 5 - went off shopping while they located it and apparently they tannoyed me so a bit of free publicity!   Anyway come to realise that this is a good day to release for Mother's Day as it will be a slow burn for the next 2 weeks and a lot of people will shop next weekend and should then continue up till Easter Smile.  But it is quite sobering to realise that the last time I bought a G4 album there were 5 album outlets in my part of West London now there are only 2 - MVC gone, independent record store gone and WH Smith no longer selling CDs in our one!

Back to the album - sleeve very nicely put together and Jonathan's comments or thanks are lovely - even manages to have this site's URL nice and large so that will keep me happy.  Only thing missing are the bonus tracks which might cause a bit of trouble with those buying online?

Instant reaction to the album tracks - wonderfully put together, arrangement, balance, orchestration, production all working together with that certain voice very, very well.

I understand why one reviewer said all the Wow tracks are at the beginning as I think we get the heart strings pulled a bit more than the ones at the end - probably because we understand the lyrics or perhaps some have more personal memories?  As far as the Godfather is concerned it brings back so many for me as does Chariots of Fire ...

Congratulations Jonathan this should sell and sell Smile provided people get to hear it but with the team you have around you I have no doubt that will happen Smile

Re: First thoughts on the album!

Well I suppose it will come as no surprise to anyone when I say I have sobbed my way through this album from begining to end!

First of all just seeing the album cover - and realising that at last it was here in album form with Jonathan's lovely face on the front and his name in bold type and knowing that for him a life long dream has come true. That started me off before anything else.

Then I read the thankyous in the back of the booklet - major waterworks then!

Such a beautiful beautiful album - I have waited so long for this. Crying

I dont think I can even begin to choose favourites yet - every song is beautiful in it's own way - every one bringing something different out of Jonathan's voice - and some are heartbreakingly poigniant.

Che Gelida Manina is still reducing me to a puddle - but they are all touching me in different ways. And its going to take time to decide which are the supreme best of a sublime album.

Well done Jonathan - you should be very proud.

    Love Molly xx Smile

My album arrived this morning in the post. I had ordered it from Amazon. Well, what an incredible CD - I just love it all. Jonathon's voice is BREATHTAKING throughout, but if I had to choose a favourite, at the moment it is Track 5 UNE GIORNO PER NOI, when he duets with Hayley Westenra. Absolutely fabulous! I also love DOWN IN THE RIVER TO PRAY, but really every single track is wonderful.

Well done Jonathon!!! You are going to be SO successful. This album is out of this world!!

Re: First thoughts on the album!

    Well the day is here!!

So pleased your album came early Molly I was surprised when it arrived on Saturday - but did not listen till after mid-night Sunday.

'Heroes'  As far as the different voices of Jonathan are concerned, especially his powerful high notes - this is the one and well chosen for television and  new fans.  Of course I love it.

Now we are Free.  I so love this, but I do think you have to have seen the film to understand the emotion.   I know some people have thought 'violent' and did not go.  To me the violence was graphics unlike modern day battles which do horrify me, and the sword movements by Russel Crowe were almost like scenes from a  ballet, fascinated me to watch.  But there is also a heartbreaking story to this of a man who finds his adored wife and son murdered and the music written for this film is outstandingly beautiful - the album still selling.  Jonathans voice as usual, shows this sadness and feeling beautifully.  The last part is the sequence from Africa in the film.  If you know the story the words in the song  have their own meaning .

The Godfather.  I think his voice is like dark velvet in this and the accompaniment is so atmospheric.  Love his entry into the lower notes.

Race to the End (Chariots of fire) Not a tune I have ever cared for, never wanted to see the film, running not my thing lol.....I do think it is meant as the race through life though, if he should stumble as he goes it doesn't really matter as long as he gave it his all - definately applies to Jonathan    I do love the last verse and especially the long note of  ' to freeeeeeeee him.

Romeo and Juliet.  Love this.  I was not happy at first about 'sharing'  and not a great fan of HW.  But it is so two young lovers and the way he 'wraps' his voice around hers in highs and lows and they sound very good together, and I did like her voice in this.  One of my favourites.

Vois Sur Ton Chemin.  Bit like a gavot - a Jane Austin story, it's lovely he and the All Angels sound gorgous together entwining. So short and very sweet.

My Own True Love. Loved it from the beginning and now a  wonderful memory of Acapello and the room vibrating around me.  Romance personified and such feeling and so love the orchestral background brings the film to the present.  The last note is out of this world.

Down in The River to Pray.  Completely different to the rest of the album, really like it.   So right just to have the choir and shows jonathan ability to sing anything and why he can also do pop when he wants to.

SE with David Garrett.  So suits his voice, the tone and emotion is very beautiful and DG accompaniment goes so well, I adore this.

Prayer in the Night.  I find this affects me in a similar way to SE.  To me these two really are classical and his voice is  wonderful and really does make emotion run inside you - I would love him to sing these two on television at some point.

Si Un Jour. Again brings out the very best in his voice.  They are not as obvious as some of the songs sung and hope that when he makes another album he will pick on the more 'unusual' that show his wonderful classical voice.  He always sang ballads as in Broken Vow, with such heart, feeling and it was also wonderful to watch the emotions  on his face as he sang from inside the words.  Hope that maybe also an album of such music will also one day appear.  Better make sure I stay alive.

Che Gelida Manina.  Ah the long awaited CGM.   I forgot that Jonathan is only 25 and therefore was putting the extra power he will have when he is in his 30s to the voice in my head and therefore taken by surprise.  I think it is sung from the viewpoint of a very young man, with beauty, emotion and sweetness.    But there is something slightly tentative in the voice and the way it is sung, as thought not quite sure - which I am not used to with Jon.  The high note near the end he hits with perfection.  But I am sure that one day, in a few years time, he will sing this again and that note along with the rest of the aria, will take my breath away.

I love the album and there is reason for great pride in a first album such as this and like everyone else will play it endlessly.

Oh and I must say.  The words of dedication - with not a soul left out!  So typical and brought smiles and a few lumps to the throat.

Like Di I need to have time to really give a full review but on first listening Jonathan should be very proud.  He has moved into another league with this album.

For me having had four tracks on constant play since December it is a bit unusual as I'm not hearing them on a level playing field.  I agree that the most recognisable are early in the the album but this will be to do with marketing.  When people look at an album listing they only really take in the first few & they needed to be the ones that people recognise.  Personally I love the later tracks.  The ebbs & flows of this album make it superb to listen to.

I agree he just needs to be on as many shows as possible as this is a winner as long as people know about it.

No.5 in Sainsburys across 3 stacks.  Also CD recommended at beginning of chart with another stack.

The Feeling at No.1    Sheryl Crow album of the week but at no.12 in chart.

Molly - can I ask when you visit Hayley Westenra site that you let them know that the duet with Hayley is simply wonderful.  I've not really appreciated I don't think just how talented she is.  The purity of her voice & the way that they both bring this track to life is just bliss.

    Lynne.
