Arsenal star's great pair of lungs wins Kelly a national award

    16 June 2008
England and Arsenal striker Kelly Smith has won the British Lung Foundation's female 'Lungs of the Year 2008' award in recognition of ''the fantastic use she has made of her lungs over the past year''.

The award, a framed photograph of a beautiful glass lung sculpture by award-winning artist Annie Cattrell, is being presented to Kelly and male winner, classical singer Jonathan Ansell, to mark the charity's annual Breathe Easy Week this week. The theme of this year's campaign is 'Big Breaths' which aims to raise awareness of lung health.

Footballer Kelly Smith says: "As a footballer for both Arsenal and England, I know just how important it is look after my body and have a good diet; it helps me to keep at the top of my game. It's fantastic to have won the British Lung Foundation's 'Lungs of the Year' award. I am a great supporter of the work that the British Lung Foundation is doing to promote the benefits of having healthy lungs".

The British Lung Foundation says that by exercising and taking bigger breaths, we deliver more oxygen to our muscles, giving them energy and strength and helping us to feel younger, live longer, run faster and sing louder.

Dame Helena Shovelton, Chief Executive of the British Lung Foundation says: "We awarded Kelly and Jonathan the Lungs of the Year award because they are both fantastic ambassadors for lung health. They both understand how precious their lungs are and why they must take good care of them if they are to be the best at what they do".

The charity is encouraging everyone to make sure they can take 'big breaths' by following its new Airway Code, a ten step guide to healthy lungs. Airway Code tips include taking regular exercise, staying smoke-free, protecting your lungs from dust and fumes, and being asbestos aware.

This has just dropped into my Inbox too Big Smile

Lungs of the Year award eh??  So Jonathan when are you going to take up my challenge to beat the record for longest held note Wink

Longest Note Held In A Hit

This record is held by Morten Harket, lead singer with group A-Ha. In "Summer Moved On" (no. 33, June 2000) he holds a vocal note for 20.2 seconds.
Click here to hear it (Real Audio).

Runner-up, and the man responsible for the longest note held on a solo single is Bill Withers. In his 1978 (and 1988) hit "Lovely Day", he holds a vocal note for 18 seconds. We're told that the note is the 'E' above 'middle C'.
Click here to hear it (Real Audio).

The longest note held by a woman, is found in "Dim All The Lights," Donna Summer's 1979 hit (16 seconds).
Click here to hear it (Real Audio).

It is worth pointing out that a number of recent dance tracks have utilised digital 'stretching' techniques to give the impression of extended vocals. We have management / record company confirmation that the notes being held in the above tracks were all done in 'real time' and represent genuine vocal skill. Click here to hear Morten Harket perform the "Summer Moved On" note live (really) at the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize Concert.

Well found Marian - how fabulous. Yes

Well done Jonathan - definitely a pair of lungs to be very very proud of!

    Great article for my folders!

He has achieved so much - and still not been a solo singer for a year yet. I'm going to list all his achievements for us once I feel better from this ghastly flu!

    Love Molly xx

    Re: Tottenham Journal 16th June

Bit more info about this here

    Link

Former G4 member Jonathan Ansell, who is now a hugely successful solo artist, knows only too well the importance of looking after his lungs so that he can take big breaths when he is performing. Jonathan topped the classical charts and hit the top ten of the pop charts earlier this year with his debut solo album.

He says: "Having a tenor voice I have to make sure that I take good care of my lungs so that I can reach all those high notes! I am delighted to have won the British Lung Foundation’s Lungs of the Year award and I fully support their Big Breaths campaign.”
